Olga Pallasch's Certificate of birth and christening

According to her birth certificate, Olga "Pallaschova" was born in the Republic of Czechoslovakia in the village/town of Sumperk on February 2, 1889, to Rudolf and Anna Pallasch. Her own notes in the Kuba family bible, however, indicates she was born in Mahr, Schonberg, Morovia. Her certificate of birth and christening list not only her parents, but also her grandparents - Vilem and Maria (Hentschelova) Pallasch and Frantiska and Jenovefa (Hoffmanova) Lechner.

In January, 2010, I was contact by Ulf Haase of Stockholm, Sweden, who is Olga's great nephew. He was able to share additional information regarding Olga's heritage and some very important corrections.

Paraphrasing Ulf's words, the Pallasch family lived the part of the old Austrian-Hungarian empire, that after the collapse of the empire in 1918, came to belong to Czechoslovakia. The "German areas" that came to belong to Czechoslovakia were Mahren, Bohmen and Schlesien. Therefore every city/village in the region had a German and a Czech name. The birth certificate is issued 1947 by Czech authority and written in the Czech language.

Therefore, both the family Bible and the birth certificate are correct, just one is written in German (the family Bible) and the other in Czech (the issued birth certificate).

Mahrisch Schonberg (German) = Sumperk (Czech)
Mahren (German) = Morava (Czech) (This is probably the "Morovia" in the family Bible.)

The Pallasch family was German (from both sides), spoke German and never put the "-ova" after the family name of the women themselves. This is something the Czechoslovakians did and still do. So Olga's family name was Pallasch, not Pallaschova. As such, her grandfather's name was Wilhelm (German), not Vilem (a possible Czech variation).

Ulf shared this knowledge passed along to him from his 99-year-old aunt Ludmilla Pallasch, who resides in Frankfurt am Main (Germany). Her father, Wilhelm Pallash, was Olga's brother, making Ludmilla Olga's niece.

Continuing with what was learned from Ulf, Olga was also an aunt to three other nieces and nephews - Rudolf "Rudi" (Died: 1979), Bruno (Died: 1943) and Irma (Died: 2009). Irma, Ulf's mother, married Henrik Haase and was the only one of the four to have children.

I have to share my utmost gratitude to Ulf Haase for sharing his knowledge of our family heritage. His information added another generation to the Pallasch family line as well as a wealth of history unbeknownst to us on this side of the "pond". And now we return to Olga's story in America.

Olga had married Alois Kuba while in Austria and traveled to the United States to join her husband who had immigrated in 1907. She journeyed on the ship "Hannover", disembarking in Galveston, Texas, on April 26, 1912. They renewed their vows after her arrival, on May 7, 1912. Between 1912 and 1919, she and Alois would be naturalized in Sonoma County, California.

Alois and Olga settled in on their homestead in Melitta (later Santa Rosa), California. The homestead was a remote canyon, attainable only by bicycle or foot. They would have four children; Frieda Josefine (1913-?), Fredrick Rudolph (1914-1987), Carl William (1916-1970), and Ernest O. (1919-2002). Olga and Alois would separate, and later divorce, approximately six months after Ernie's birth. Olga remained on the homestead, working as a housekeeper to a private family.

Olga moved to Guerneville, California, later in life and worked for many years as a cook for the St. Elizabeth Parish. Once retired, she eventually resided in the Summerfield Convalescent Hospital in Santa Rosa, California. She passed on June 26, 1974, from a heart attack at the age of 85. Her cremated remains are kept at the Chapel of the Chimes in Santa Rosa.
